ALL RULES LISTED BELOW: Rules, 10 Day Breakdown, and YouTube Thumbnail rules
The Basics
On DAY 1, the 10 Day Film Challenge will assign the following 6 items to ALL SCHOOLS via email. The required elements must appear in the finished film. Teachers will release this information to students on Day 1 at the beginning of each class.
1. (Required) Character: FOR EXAMPLE -- Alan (or Alana) Mahler -
2. (Required) That Character's Backstory: FOR EXAMPLE -- Alan or Alana Mahler is 'Recently Unemployed' in the film.
3. (Required) Prop: FOR EXAMPLE -- A CD or DVD (the actual disk) must be used in the film by any character.
4. (Required) Line of Dialogue: FOR EXAMPLE -- "It's not easy being me." must be spoken verbatim by any character.
5. (Optional) Cinematic Technique: FOR EXAMPLE -- Rack Focus can be used creatively in the film, but it's only optional.
6. (Required) Genres. One, from a list of 10, is to be 'chosen from a hat' for each filmmaking team on Day 1.
NOTE: The list of genres will be posted on our website and sent to the teachers well prior to Day 1 in order for students and teachers to research them in preparation of Day 1.

Overall Challenge Rules
The following rules apply to each participating group/production team:
A. Deadlines, times and locations:
1. The 10 Day Film Challenge will occur in high schools in USA during the school day, during a specified 10-day period (usually in the Spring).
2. Deadline: The participating STUDENTS must complete the film/video work in time to deliver it to the TEACHER on Day 10 BY 4:00PM. Also, the students must submit the film's information and YouTube Thumbnail by 4pm on Day 10 to the 10 Day Film Challenge.
3. The TEACHER is responsible for uploading the finished film(s) itself by the end of the day on 'Day 11'.
4. The teacher must have the film(s) in his or her possession by 4pm on Day 10 and has from 4pm on Day 10 until 11:59pm the next day to upload the film(s) to the 10 Day Film Challenge. Any film(s) NOT submitted to the 10 Day Film Challenge by 11:59pm that following day may be disqualified.
5. Only works that meet the deadline will be officially part of the competition. All FILMING/PRODUCTION must be completed on campus. This is a school project to be FILMED on the campus of YOUR school within the normal limits of a school day.
6. The campus/property on which you shoot must be on the continuous grounds of your high school and the property of your school district. If that property is not owned and operated by your district, it is not permitted and your film may be disqualified.
(*inner city schools may use city sidewalks adjacent to the building even though they may be city property and not be official district property as outdoor campus space may be limited. Anything besides the sidewalks on the perimeter of your building must be property of the school district or it can not be used as a location)
7. Normal limits of a school day is defined as class time, student free time such as study halls or lunch periods, reasonable after school time (same time as a club meeting for example). No nights, weekends, or off campus FILMING/PRODUCTION before or during the 10 Day Film Challenge.
B. All creativity must take place during the "Official 10 Day Time Period":
Any creativity work in advance of the competition timeline is prohibited. Creative work includes, but is not limited to:
• Script writing, rehearsing, filming, scoring and editing. These must ONLY be done during the official 10 Day Time Period.
C. Work done PRIOR to Day 1 + Cast and Crew Rules
• The only work that can be done PRIOR to Day 1: Researching genres and cinematic techniques. Securing locations and equipment. Organizing your cast and crew for the film.
CAST AND CREW RULE:
1. Simply put, this is a student project created by high school 'filmmakers' in a given school.
2. The STUDENTS of that school must be the principal actors in the film.
3. Adults can be participants and actors, but they should not be the principal actors.
4. Anyone at all appearing in the film, must either attend your high school or be an employee of that high school.
D. All footage must be shot between Day 1 and Day 10 of the Challenge:
• No stock footage or footage shot or created at another time may be used.
• Animation is permitted, but MUST be created during the 10 Day time period. Video effects (such as 'smoke effects' or 'explosion effects') are permitted as long as the school / student has the rights to use them.
• Still photographs are permitted, provided that the team has the rights to them. The photos do not need to be created during the 10 Day time period.
E. Teacher must secure the details of the actual film challenge via email on Day 1 of the Challenge:
• The teacher will be given the requirements and a list of genres that each student filmmaking group will pick from at random.
F. All required elements must appear in the film:
On Day 1, each participating group will be assigned required elements that must appear in its film:
EVERY FILM IN THE ENTIRE STATE WILL HAVE THE EXACT SAME:
(a) CHARACTER
(b) THAT CHARACTER'S BACKSTORY (YES, the assigned character must have this backstory)
(c) PROP
(d) LINE OF DIALOGUE
(e) CINEMATIC TECHNIQUE (which is always OPTIONAL).
(f) CHOICE OF GENRE (chosen from hat)
• The required Character must be seen ON SCREEN (not just referenced to) and identified by FIRST and LAST NAME at some point in the film. That character's backstory must be clearly identified. The Prop must be seen ON SCREEN.
• The required Line of Dialogue must be used verbatim. It may be spoken, sung and/or written. It may be in any language, though if it is unclear that it is the required Line, there must be a translation.
• To qualify as an "Official 10 Day Film," each group's film must be in the genre it selects and must contain all required elements (the CINEMATIC TECHNIQUE is OPTIONAL) within the official time limit and prior to the credits.
G. All cast and crew must be volunteers.
H. Any type of video or film camera may be used.
I. Music in the films:
Participating groups are encouraged to work with a local composer and/or musicians to write and record music for the films. It is permissible for a participating group to use pre-recorded music; HOWEVER, the participating group must have the rights to any music used in its film. As with music, pre-recorded sound effects are allowed, but you must have rights to use them. Schools that have a royalty-free music library may use that music in their films. Pre-made Garageband / Apple Loops / Final Cut Pro / iMovie, etc... stock music and sound effects are acceptable. Music and sound effects you create in Garageband or in similar software are acceptable. MUSIC RANDOMLY DOWNLOADED FROM THE INTERNET IS GENERALLY NOT ACCEPTABLE.
Music violations may result in disqualification. Films using music without clearance may not be eligible to screen on virtual screening day.
* Please note that all films will be on YouTube - YouTube WILL AUTOMATICALLY identify any music that is licensed - Please do NOT use music randomly downloaded from the internet *
J. Each group must submit a 1280 x 720 YouTube Thumbnail as part of the final film-submission process:

K. Film Duration:
The actual finished film must be a minimum of 3 minutes in duration, and a maximum of 4 minutes in duration - not including ending credits, not including opening slate. See Rule L and O. Disqualifications may result if the film is not within the specified duration.
L. Credits at the end of each film are limited to a maximum of 15 seconds:
The 15 seconds is NOT considered a part of the finished film, as stated in Rule K. (That is, a film may be 3-4 minutes long; the 15 maximum seconds of ending credits can be beyond 4 minute max film time.). The scrolling credits can NOT contain anything pertinent to the structure of your narrative. The sole purpose of this 15 seconds is for ending credits. - NO FILM MAY HAVE A RUNNING TIME OF OVER 4 MINUTES AND 15 SECONDS FROM START TO END - SEE "LETTER O" BELOW FOR THE ONLY EXCEPTION.
The end credits must include the words: "This film was made for the 10 Day Film Challenge. www.tendayfilm.org"
M. Opening Title Sequence: Required for ALL FILMS - CLICK HERE FOR FULL DETAILS
An opening title sequence is required for every film. It is considered to be part of the film, and therefore, it is part of the four-minute maximum film time. CLICK HERE for FULL DETAILS.
N. Day 10, 4pm: The films, information and thumbnail are due:
By 4pm local time on Day 10 of the Challenge, students must deliver the finished film to the teacher and submit the film information and YouTube thumbnail to the 10 Day Film Challenge committee as per contest rules. (a) the film is due to the teacher by 4pm on Day 10 and (b) the information and YouTube thumbnail must be submitted online by 4pm on Day 10. Budget your time. Teachers will have through Day 11 to upload films. Films and information not submitted on time may be disqualified.
O. Each film needs an opening SLATE to identify the film:
Your film should have the following 'slates' (and will NOT be part of your 3-4 minute finished time): CLICK to see sample.
• 1 second of black at the beginning of your video project/timeline (no audio of any kind here)
• Then, 3 seconds OVER BLACK: A title card with: Team Name (created by each individual team), title of film, and genre. (no audio of any kind here)
SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT FILM TITLE - The Line of Dialogue may NOT be the title of the film.
• Then, 1 second of black (no audio of any kind here)
• Then, your film
• Finally, after the ending credits, 1 additional second of black. (no audio of any kind here)
P. Student clearance to appear a public YOUTUBE film:
The Talent will be appearing on screen in a public YOUTUBE film. If selected to appear on our YouTube Playlist. Each school is responsible for ensuring that student names and faces can be used in public. See your individual school administrators for school policy.
Q. To be an official 10 Day Film:
Each participating group's film/video production must follow all rules herein. The 10 Day Film Challenge organizers reserve the right to screen only "Official 10 Day Films."
R. Technical Specs of finished films
The file name of your film should be as follows: SCHOOL NAME - film name - STATE (ex: CHEROKEE - The Color of Money - NJ)
* the 10 Day Film Challenge producers need to identify AT A GLANCE the name of the film and the school.
* naming the film as listed above ensures that YOUR FILM will be identified as 'officially submitted' to the 10 Day Film Challenge
The file size of your film should be 299MB or LESS.
A quick compression tip: Export your film in Quicktime in 720p quality. A 3-4 minute film should be about 200MB in 720p.
No media will be returned to the school.
S. Possible Disqualifications:
The 10 Day Film Challenge organizers/judges may, in their sole discretion, DISQUALIFY entries deemed to be inappropriate (including but not limited to the use of alcohol, tobacco, firearms, no wielding knives as weapons, profanity, or sexual conduct not appropriate for school viewing) or otherwise non-compliant as per ANY of the rules of the 10 Day Film Challenge. DISQUALIFICATIONS may specifically result from inaccurate reading/presentation of the required line of dialogue; inaccurate identification of the required character and backstory; inaccurate identification of the required prop; or inaccurate identification of the genre.
T. School Registrations
The 10 Day Film Challenge organizers may, in their sole discretion, refuse a school's (or teacher's) registration or remove a school (or teacher) from their current participation for violation of any rules listed above or for any other reason deemed necessary by the organizers. This includes, but is not limited to, pre-registrations, current participation, or attendance at any 10 Day Film Challenge event (if there is one).
U. Amending rules:
The 10 Day Film Challenge organizers may add to or amend these rules at any time prior to Day 1 of the Challenge.

10-Day Breakdown
On Day 1, the genre, the character, the backstory, the prop, and the line of dialogue that EVERY FILM MUST INCLUDE is to be given to student filmmaking groups. The cinematic technique will be released PRIOR to Day 1 AND IS OPTIONAL. See classroom teacher for details.
USE THE SCHEDULING INFORMATION BELOW AS A GUIDE. Teachers, you know your students. Do what works for you.
(Note: No cameras should be taken off campus, home at night, or over a weekend.)
Day 1 - Students are assigned the genre, character, backstory, prop, and line of dialogue that must be in their film. Teachers should place the separate genres "in a hat" and have filmmaking teams draw separate genres. Pre-Production/Scripting begins today.
Day 2 - Pre-Production/Scripting continues.
Day 3 - Scripting should finish today by the end of the class period. Shooting can begin any time today.
Day 4 - Shooting/Production should begin. Use classroom time and work within the normal limits of the school day. All films must be shot on campus. Campus is defined as the continuous grounds of your high school facility that are owned and operated by your school district. Inner City schools may use the sidewalks adjacent to your building even though they may be officially city property.
Day 5 - Shooting continues. Use classroom time and work within the normal limits of the school day. Shooting may finish today and editing can begin tomorrow.
Day 6 - Shooting should finish today. Use classroom time and work within the normal limits of the school day . Editing may begin any time today.
Day 7 - Editing should begin today.
Day 8 - Editing continues.
Day 9 - Editing continues.
Day 10 - Editing wraps up. Your 3-4 minute finished film (with an additional 15-second maximum ending credits) should be exported according to your teacher's instructions and in the hands of the teacher BY 4:00PM. NO EXECEPTIONS.
By 4:00pm on Day 10, a student representative from each film must complete the SUBMIT FINAL PRODUCT form on this site - the film is NOT uploaded by the student here, but the YOUTUBE THUMBNAIL IS UPLOADED by the student on that form. Be sure that the THUMBNAIL is on the same computer that is being used to complete this form. You must do it all in one shot! The THUMBNAIL can be emailed to [email protected] by the student filmmakers in the event that the upload does NOT work. All of this must be done by 4:00pm on Day 10 or the film may be disqualified.
The TEACHER, by 11:59pm on what is essentially Day 11, is responsible for uploading the finished movie to the 10 Day Film Challenge as per specific instructions.
USE THE SCHEDULING INFORMATION BELOW AS A GUIDE. Teachers, you know your students. Do what works for you.
(Note: No cameras should be taken off campus, home at night, or over a weekend.)
Day 1 - Students are assigned the genre, character, backstory, prop, and line of dialogue that must be in their film. Teachers should place the separate genres "in a hat" and have filmmaking teams draw separate genres. Pre-Production/Scripting begins today.
Day 2 - Pre-Production/Scripting continues.
Day 3 - Scripting should finish today by the end of the class period. Shooting can begin any time today.
Day 4 - Shooting/Production should begin. Use classroom time and work within the normal limits of the school day. All films must be shot on campus. Campus is defined as the continuous grounds of your high school facility that are owned and operated by your school district. Inner City schools may use the sidewalks adjacent to your building even though they may be officially city property.
Day 5 - Shooting continues. Use classroom time and work within the normal limits of the school day. Shooting may finish today and editing can begin tomorrow.
Day 6 - Shooting should finish today. Use classroom time and work within the normal limits of the school day . Editing may begin any time today.
Day 7 - Editing should begin today.
Day 8 - Editing continues.
Day 9 - Editing continues.
Day 10 - Editing wraps up. Your 3-4 minute finished film (with an additional 15-second maximum ending credits) should be exported according to your teacher's instructions and in the hands of the teacher BY 4:00PM. NO EXECEPTIONS.
By 4:00pm on Day 10, a student representative from each film must complete the SUBMIT FINAL PRODUCT form on this site - the film is NOT uploaded by the student here, but the YOUTUBE THUMBNAIL IS UPLOADED by the student on that form. Be sure that the THUMBNAIL is on the same computer that is being used to complete this form. You must do it all in one shot! YOUTUBE THUMBNAIL RULESEach film must submit a YOUTUBE THUMBNAIL of their film.
Your custom thumbnail image should be as large as possible. It will be used as the preview image in the embedded player. We recommend your custom thumbnails:
USING PHOTOSHOP? Make your document 16" wide x 9" height x 72 resolution Name the file the TITLE OF YOUR MOVIE.
The LINE OF DIALOGUE can NOT be the title of your film. It must be submitted BY 4:00PM on Day 10 by the student filmmakers. You must use the SUBMIT FINAL PRODUCT page of this website to upload your thumbnail. You will be uploading the THUMBNAIL as part of the final submission process for your film. As a last resort, you can email to [email protected] Include in the email the NAME OF THE MOVIE and YOUR SCHOOL. |
